Frist Drops The Ball On Immigration

May 26, 2006

The United States Senate voted out a so-called immigration reform bill that will cripple this country. It rewards criminal behavior while pretending to bolster the border with 350 miles of fence along a 2,000-mile border. However, the Dodd amendment requires consultation with Mexico before this fence is erected ensuring it will never be built.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist was absolutely giddy at the passage of this disastrous bill. In his press release, he chose to spin the bill as a tough illegal immigration law, completely omitting the most egregious parts of the bill dealing with amnesty. Yes, amnesty, Mr. Frist. When you're able to break the law and come here illegally then have that crime magically waived aside for a $2,000 fine, that's amnesty. Oh, but they'll have to pay back taxes for three of the last five years. That's punishment? If so, punish me!

Tony Snow, the new White House press secretary, has obviously been drinking the Bush Kool-Aid. He predicted the amnesty provisions would survive the House-Senate conference committee because congressmen understand they'll pay a “heavier political price for failing to act, than for acting.” Snow explained, “If you are a Republican member of Congress and you're concerned about illegal immigration, do you really want to say to your constituents: You know, I'm going to wait a couple of years before I take up the issue of people knowingly hiring illegal aliens, I want to wait a couple of years before I go ahead and try to identify who the illegal aliens are, I want to wait a couple of years before I start grappling with what to do with these 11 or 12 million people who are here illegally.”

That's what's so frustrating about this whole debate. We already have laws against hiring illegal aliens, Tony! Those laws were supposedly strengthened in 1986 when we gave over 2 million illegals amnesty. Those laws are not being enforced. Last year, out of the millions of illegals who are working in this country, only three businesses were cited by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Three, Tony. What makes you think they'll start now?

This is absolutely maddening! I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone when I hear people like Senator Lindsay Graham say clearly over 60 percent of Americans are in favor of what the Senate just did. What planet is he living on? Everywhere I go people are hopping mad about this but the Senate is completely unresponsive. The president is completely unresponsive. Why?

Oil. Most people don't realize just how dependent we are on Mexico for energy. Mexico is the second-largest provider of crude oil to the United States . That's right, number two. The top provider is Canada , believe it or not. The Canadians provide 18 percent of the oil we use while Mexico provides 15 percent. The Saudi contribution is around 12 percent. It all starts to make sense now, doesn't it? Bush and some members of Congress are afraid to upset Vicente Fox because he might cut off the oil. Meanwhile, they stand aside as the invasion of our country continues unabated. They've sold us out.

If this bill passes, millions of immigrants, both legal and illegal, will flood across our borders. Unlike the waves of immigration in the past, these immigrants won't care one bit about assimilating and becoming part of America . They'll merely come here for the money, bringing with them the desolation of the third world country they fled. Our only hope is that the House-Senate conference committee kills this bill. Once it's unleashed on our country, America will never be the same again.
