GOP's Deal With The Devil
May 18, 2007
You may already be sick of hearing about the illegal immigration issue. We're all going to be sick of it before it's all over but it's too important to ignore. The proponents of illegal immigration are praying we get sick of it and just give in; which is basically what happened with the Republicans in Congress. Senators Lindsey Graham, John McCain and other so-called Republicans collapsed like a card table. Graham was recently seen addressing the racist organization, La Raza, where he told those in attendance that anyone who opposed illegal immigrants was a bigot. Graham, along with his weak-kneed compatriots, showed themselves too incompetent to lead now they're embarrassing themselves as lapdogs of the new majority on an issue of monumental importance. Their impatience at getting something done on illegal immigration forced them into the inextricable position of allowing their enemies to write the legislation and thus control the issue.
But, you know who's showing the patience of Job? The Democrats and, specifically, Ted Kennedy. You see, Uncle Teddy backed and pushed the last major immigration bill that granted amnesty to 2.7 million illegal aliens in 1986. He said then, as he says now, that amnesty will not mean more illegal immigrants. Of course, he was wrong then and he's wrong now. Kennedy has shown a penchant for supporting flawed immigration law.
Ole Teddy's history with immigration goes back to a crucial bill he heavily supported in 1965. That bill set strict limits on immigrants from European countries and opened the floodgates on immigrants from third-world countries. He said at the time, “our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually.” No, Teddy, not a million but millions , as it turns out. He also said, “the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset.” Naturally, he was wrong on that count, too. Millions did flood into America from third-world countries and pretty soon blacks were no longer the largest minority.
Don't misunderstand. I'm not clawing to the notion that the ethnic makeup should be what it was in the days of Leave It To Beaver . What I am saying is if we're going to change the ethnic makeup of this country it should be by way of producers, not welfare recipients. Even the so-called hard-working Mexicans who cross the border in search of jobs end up on the government dole, too. Study after study has proven that low-educated, low-skilled labor ends up being a net drain on the economy, despite how much money big corporations are saving on labor costs. What we're doing is we are exporting jobs and importing welfare, which is unsustainable in the long run.
This latest incarnation of amnesty being touted by Kennedy and Bush is probably the single most destructive piece of legislation ever to come before Congress. It rewards lawbreakers while thumbing a nose at those who chose to come here the legal way. It begs for more illegal immigrants while giving no assurances that our borders will be closed. It's a repeat of the 1986 debacle and, ironically, it's once again Ted Kennedy who's asking us to trust him. Say what you will about Mr. Kennedy but trust has never been one of his virtues.
The Boston Globe lauded Kennedy as “the consummate dealmaker.” They gathered praise from both sides of the aisle and lavishly heaped it upon their favorite son. It's a deal, alright. A raw deal; just another in the long line of bad decisions from one of the most corrupt and incorrigible members of Congress. How many more of Ted Kennedy's mistakes can this country take?
