Al Qaqaa Story Blows Up In Kerry's Face

Phil Valentine

In an attempt to embarrass the Bush administration, John Kerry - with the assistance of the New York Times and CBS - launched an October Surprise.  They claimed that 350 to 380 metric tons of explosives went missing at the al Qaqaa depot in Iraq under U.S. control.  There were two major problems with the story, however.  First, it was 18 months old.  The depot was raided back in April of 2003 or before.  The other problem for the Kerry campaign was, in all likelihood, the explosives were gone before U.S. troops arrived on the scene.

As they tried to drive home the gravity of the situation, Kerry henchmen may very well have made the Bush administration's case concerning weapons of mass destruction.  Delaware Senator Joe Biden told the Today Show, "The fact of the matter is there's 350 tons of this stuff that is easily moved, highly dangerous, easily used -- brought down the [USS] Cole, one pound of it brought down Pan Am 103."  One pound of it brought down an airliner?  In that case, the stockpile in Iraq, by the Democrats own admission, was capable of bringing down over 700,000 commercial airliners.  If that's not a weapon of mass destruction, what is?

Kerry sycophant bloggers immediately blamed Karl Rove, saying they were set up . . . again.  They also blamed the 60 Minutes bogus document debacle on Rove, saying he made them take the bait.  The said fact is, 60 Minutes had planned to air this bogus Iraq explosives story two days before the campaign.  The New York Times got wind of the story and scooped them.  Not to be outdone, NBC debunked the Times story by documenting that their embedded reporter arrived with the U.S. troops to find al Qaqaa virtually empty.  Ken Dixon, a soldier with the 101st, confirmed that story to Steve Gill and me on WTN.  He told me the few remaining containers of weapons bore the markings of French and German.  Could this be one of the reasons why they refused to help us in Iraq?  Is this part of the Oil-for-Food scandal?  Stay tuned.
